The Spring Water of Yasoba
A cold mineral spring flows from the foot of Mt. Kanayama. Also known as Nozawai, it is said to be a sacred spring that never dries up, even in the harshest of droughts. Legend tells that long ago, Prince Sarure defeated an evil fish that had been wreaking havoc in the Seto Inland Sea. Soldiers who had been struck down by the fish’s poison – 88 in total – were revived by the water from this spring, earning it the name “Water of Eighty-Eight”. Another legend involves the Retired Emperor Sutoku. After his death, while directions from the capital on the proper handling of his remains were still forthcoming, his body was reverently immersed in the sacred spring at Yasoba.
