Kandani Shrine
神谷神社
Kandani Shrine is dedicated to Hinoyui-no-Mikoto, Okutsu-Hiko-no-Mikoto, Okutsu-Hime-no-Mikoto, and the Four Kasuga Deities. Behind the shrine is a sacred rock formation called Yokou-seki. The shrine is mentioned in the Engishiki and is considered an ancient shrine.
The main hall is built on foundation stones atop a 1.5-meter-high random stone platform. It features a three-bay by two-bay gabled roof structure with a front porch (mokoshi). The cypress bark roof gracefully curves from the ridge to the worship hall, exemplifying the three-bay flowing style (mitsumanasha nagare-zukuri) of shrine architecture.
An ink inscription on the main hall's ridge beam reads "Sho-ichii Kandani Daimyojin Gohouden Kenpo 7th Year, Second Month, 10th Day..." dating the structure to 1219 in the early Kamakura period, making it Japan's oldest existing shrine building.
