03 Ruins of Kamo Temple
-
The large stone in this rice field is thought to be the foundation stone of a pagoda (the stone that supports the central pillar of the pagoda), indicating that a temple once stood here. This temple, named after the local area, is called Kamo Haiji (Abandoned Temple of Kamo) and is believed to have been built between the late 7th and early 8th centuries.

Uma no Kami Treasure Pagoda
City-designated cultural property (structure): In the cemetery called Irie Cemetery or Miyatake Cemetery to the southeast of Nishikamo Shrine in Kamo-cho, two treasure pagodas stand alongside an Edo period five-ringed tower at the northern end of the central area. One is severely damaged with only the cover and body remaining, but the other is well-preserved. It is a 1.82m tall stone pagoda made of angular tuff, consisting of a base, body, cover, finial, and jewel from bottom to top. Similar pagodas can be found at Nishiyama Shrine, Kikuzuka, and Yahoko Shrine scattered in Aya-kita, suggesting this style might be unique to this region. Based on the shape of the body and cover, it is thought to be from the early Kamakura period.

Konoike Kofun (Ancient Tomb)
It’s on top of the pond’s embankment. It can’t be seen as long as there’s water in the pond.
The horizontal stone chamber has a room where people were buried (genshitsu) and a passage leading to it (sendo), but only the gate (genmon) between the genshitsu and sendo remains.
Usually, as shown in the second photo, only the top stone is faintly reflected on the water’s surface.

04 Higashikamo Shrine
-
Higashikamo Shrine is located at the foot of Goshikidai. According to the “Katsuragi Daimyojin Ki” stored in the shrine, it is said that Ato no Oashi, the uncle of Kobo Daishi, requested the Shinto priest Kunikyu of Kamo Shrine in Kyoto during the Konin era (810-824) to invite the deity Takakamo from Katsuragi in Yamato to be the tutelary deity of Kamo-sho.
