  • 02 Artificial Land

    • The Sakaide Artificial Land project applied a housing district improvement project for the back areas and a disaster prevention building block creation project along the main street, aiming to find new methods of urban redevelopment. It is regarded as a forerunner of modern urban redevelopment.
Designed by architect Masato Otaka, it was completed in four phases from 1968 to 1986.
A thick concrete foundation was built, with a civic hall, shopping area, and parking lot underneath, and residential buildings and parks above.
This innovative structure was a hot topic as a new model of urban development, so why not take a look?

The lord of the Takamatsu domain, Matsudaira Yoritaka, praised this achievement and erected this monument at Tenmasha Shrine, on the boundary between the old land and the reclaimed land, as a memorial.
It is significant as the starting point of Sakaide’s development and is also valuable as a representative monument of the Edo period.

At the eastern end of the port, a night lantern was built and dedicated to the god of Konpira Shrine, praying for maritime safety and serving as a beacon for the harbor.
