Step Out of the Car and Into Stunning Views: Discover Goshikidai

Just step out of your car and take a short walk, and you'll find yourself surrounded by breathtaking views. No special gear is needed, and you don't have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy them.

What starts as a quick stop can turn into a memorable moment, with the Seto Ohashi Bridge and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea stretching out before you.

In Sakaide, there are two mountains where spectacular scenery is just a short walk from the parking area, making them perfect for an easy, spontaneous adventure.

INDEX

Shoutsujiyama (117m): The Mountain Closest to the Seto Ohashi Bridge

Shoutsujiyama, located on the border between Sakaide City and Utazu Town, is known as the closest mountain to the Seto Ohashi Bridge.

It’s about a 10-minute drive from the Sakaide-Kita Interchange. Along the way, you’ll pass Shiogama Shrine, where a statue of Kume Eizaemon, the man who helped develop Sakaide’s salt fields, stands quietly by the roadside.

Continue driving a little farther, and the landscape suddenly opens up. The Seto Ohashi Bridge comes into view, stretching impressively across the water right before your eyes.

So close. So enormous. It’s the kind of sight that catches you by surprise and stays with you long after you’ve left.

Spectacular views unfold even before you reach the summit.

In spring, wild mountain cherry trees come into bloom, creating a scene unique to this spot, where the ancient stone burial mound at the summit, the bridge, and the blossoms all come together in a single view.

Another highlight is the panoramic view across the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, stretching from west to east. On a clear day, you can spot Takamijima, Honjima, Hiroshima (Marugame City), Otsuchijima, Kotsuchijima, and even Shodoshima.

At the summit, you’ll also find St. Angelina, a scenic viewpoint connected to a wedding venue.

In 2006, it became the first location in Shikoku to be designated a “Lovers’ Sanctuary” and has also been recognized as one of Japan’s Night View Heritage sites. With a swing designed for couples and a café restaurant, it’s a lovely place to spend time together.

After sunset, the Seto Ohashi Bridge glows with orange illumination, creating a beautiful scene against the night sky.

The romantic evening views offer a completely different experience from the wide-open scenery of the daytime, making this spot especially memorable.

Another spot you shouldn’t miss is Y urugi Rock, located a short distance from St. Angelina.

While the rock itself is easy to find, discovering just the right spot to make it move is part of the fun. With a gentle touch from just one finger, the enormous rock can suddenly begin to wobble. It’s such a surprising experience that you might find yourself exclaiming, “It really moved!”

The approach is also lined with stone Jizo statues representing a miniature version of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, along with traditional stone lanterns. Together, they create a nostalgic atmosphere that captures the quiet charm of Japan’s countryside mountains.

A 1,000-Year-Old Mountain Fortress and Panoramic Views of the Sanuki Plain: Kiyama (462.3m)

Kiyama is more than just a mountain with beautiful views.

It was once home to a Korean-style mountain fortress, similar to those built at Yashima and Kinojo Castle in Okayama. Traces of the ancient fortress can still be found today, including the remains of a castle gate, a man-made water outlet known as Minakuchi, and Horoso Stones, which once served as foundation stones for the gate.

These quiet remnants offer a glimpse into the distant past, reminding visitors that a fortress stood on this very mountain more than a thousand years ago.

Another great thing about Kiyama is that you can drive almost all the way to the summit.

From the observation deck, you’ll be treated to sweeping 360-degree views of the Sanuki Plain. To the north stands Mount Iino, affectionately known as Sanuki Fuji. To the west, you can see Mount Zozu, home to the famous Kotohira-gu Shrine. Looking south, you’ll spot Reoma World and the three mountains of Ayauta, with the Sanuki Mountains stretching across the distant horizon.

You can even see the Takamatsu Expressway winding through the landscape below. It’s a wonderful place to take in the scenery of Kagawa all at once. Even for locals, seeing familiar places from high above offers a surprisingly fresh perspective.

Halfway up the mountain, you’ll find the Myojingahara Historic Site, where the renowned scholar and statesman Sugawara no Michizane is said to have performed a ritual to pray for rain.

On the northern side of the mountain lies Fudo Falls, reached by a roughly 30-minute walk along a mountain trail from the parking area. During the coldest part of winter, the waterfall can become covered in icicles, creating a magical frozen landscape.

Kiyama is also a popular place to watch the first sunrise of the New Year from the summit. It’s a mountain that has long held a special place in the hearts of people in Sakaide.

▲ Basic Information

  • Elevation: 462.3 m
  • Location: Nishinoshocho, Sakaide, Kagawa Prefecture [ MAP ]
  • Walking Time: The observation deck is accessible by car almost all the way to the summit. Fudo Falls is approximately a 40-minute walk from the Ryohoku Observatory parking area.
  • Parking: Available
  • Restrooms: Available
  • Access: Approximately 30 minutes by car from JR Sakaide Station to the Kiyama Observation Deck.

▲ Before You Visit

If you’re heading to the observation deck, Kiyama is an easy and convenient place to visit.

However, if you plan to explore Fudo Falls or walk along the mountain trails, comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are recommended. Temperatures can drop considerably in winter, especially in the early morning on New Year’s Day, so be sure to dress warmly.

You don’t need any special preparation to discover views that make you glad you came. That’s the charm of Sakaide’s mountains. If you leave thinking, “I’d love to come back,” then even a little detour has been well worth it.
