The luck of meeting a “phantom” waterfall — Chigogataki Falls

One of Kagawa’s largest waterfalls, with an approximately 80-meter drop.
Chigogataki plunges from the mid-slopes of Mt. Shiromine in the Goshikidai range, one of the few large-scale waterfalls in the prefecture.

But this waterfall isn’t visible all the time.
Most days the flow is minimal, as if the mountain is keeping it hidden.
It reveals itself only during brief windows—typically in the rainy season or after heavy rainfall.

That’s why it’s known as a “phantom waterfall,” treasured by nature lovers and locals alike.

And when it appears, the sight is breathtaking.
Water rushes down sheer rock faces like a blessing from the heavens.
It’s impossible not to feel the power of nature.

This waterfall also has another unique appeal.
A myth-like legend that is still told today.

It is said that Yamato Takeru once led his soldiers here to defeat an “evil fish” that appeared in the area.
After the battle, the soldiers collapsed, overcome by poisonous fumes.
Then a divine child appeared riding on clouds, gave them water from a bottle, and saved their lives.
The mountain the child flew back to came to be called Chigogatake, and the waterfall was named Chigogataki after it.

A natural stage where history and legend intertwine—imbued with a spiritual presence.
Chigogataki is more than a scenic spot; it’s a waterfall with a story—one that lingers in the heart.

Wrapped in prayer and silence — Kiyama Fudō Falls

The other place we hope you’ll visit quietly is Fudō Falls, nestled near the eighth station of Mt. Kiyama.
With a drop of about 15 meters, it’s not flashy—but it carries a calming power that gently settles the mind.

Long ago, this area—together with a Fudō Myōō carving said to have been etched into the rock by Kōbō Daishi—served as a training site for ascetic practitioners.
Even today, some visitors quietly clasp their hands in prayer before Fudō Myōō enshrined near the falls.

The name of the falls also comes from Fudō Myōō.
Because people once offered prayers to Fudō Myōō at this former training ground,
the waterfall came to be known as “Fudō Falls.”

Around the falls, outcrops of Sanukite—a stone unique to Sanuki—create rugged rock faces that evoke an ancient energy.
With forest stillness and waterfall sounds resonating together, this is truly a “quiet power spot.”

In Sakaide’s mountains, take time to reconnect with nature—and yourself.

If Chigogataki is a “phantom spectacle,” then Kiyama Fudō Falls is a “place of quiet prayer.”
One offers awe-inspiring scale and the miracle of perfect timing; the other offers a calm that slowly sinks into the heart.

A journey to these two waterfalls is more than sightseeing.
It can be time to regain your own rhythm and face nature—and your inner self—honestly.

Whether you’re new to hiking,
seeking healing in nature,
or craving a little adventure—

head to Sakaide’s mountains next weekend.
